PROJECT OVERVIEW

The scope of this project entailed the foundation and support of excavation for a new, affordable housing building in East Harlem, New York. The Gilbert, a 16-story residential building, is supported by 295 STELCOR micropiles.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

The design called for expensive deep pressure grouted micropiles. Vibration had to be limited because the project was across from a hospital and adjacent to FDR Drive, a busy highway. Subsurface conditions consisted of deep rock, old marshland, clay, and soft substrate that were unique to NYC and limited options for support. On the east side of the site, voids were encountered during installation and piles consistently hit obstructions.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

Posillico proposed STELCOR DDM piles to provide the same capacity as the pressure-grouted micro piles and to eliminate vibration to the adjacent structures. Posillico was able to redesign the project into a more cost effective and time effective solution that contributed to savings directly to the owner.
