PROJECT OVERVIEW

National Grid contracted with Posillico to install +/- 1,400 feet of 8” STL Gas Transmission Main beneath Merrick Avenue, by the Meadowbrook Parkway, to replace the existing main which was leaking. The work was performed via Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) to create space for the pipe underneath the parkway without trenching through this main trafficway. The scope also included excavating, shoring and backfilling of tie-in pits, gas main coating, grass restoration and Maintenance and Protection of Traffic.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

The most challenging aspect of this project was the process of assembling a pipeline in a public park and maintaining perfect alignment of the pipe the whole way through. Posillico was also required to respect time constraints to complete the project for an upcoming fundraising walk. In addition to the work being generally challenging and an aggressive completion schedule, the project also had permit hurdles to get past.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

Posillico used an internal survey team to assist with the alignment of the pipeline and track its progress during the installation. Our agency relationships assisted National Grid with the permitting and expediting process. Posillico’s workforce consisted of qualified welding and HDD personnel.
