PROJECT OVERVIEW
Breakwater Marine (BWM) was selected to install a dead man supported sheet pile bulkhead for an active marine terminal. Walers were installed with all welded connections, on the land side of the bulkhead to prevent structural damage by barges. Existing remnant bulkheads were removed utilizing a mixture of divers performing underwater cutting, as well as land based mechanical shears. Additionally, terminal maintenance dredging was performed concurrently with sheet pile removal to minimize schedule and maintain terminal operations.
WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX
Permit requirement to remove existing sections of sheet pile bulkhead back to historic shoreline limit. Extreme deterioration and distortions of the sheets from years of barge impacts prevented extraction using conventional methods.
HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT
Dredging the berth prior to demolition gave Breakwater’s dive team access to competent non-distorted steel. Using Broco underwater cutting rods the divers rigged and cut away the distorted upper sections. A vibratory hammer was lowered onto the prepared sheets with guidance from the divers and each sheet was extracted leaving the berth clear for use.
