PROJECT OVERVIEW

The work required to replace a sewer and water mains and to connect the new system to a new building being constructed. The sewer/water main runs below the southbound lane of Park Ave between East 110-112th St in East Harlem. The 500-foot stretch of Park Ave is bound by Metro North Railroad (MNR) to the east, East 110th Street to the south, East 112th Street in the north, and active construction sites to the west. The work included to install 20”/12”/6” CL54 water mains, 60” RCP/48” RCP/12”DIP sewer pipes, sewer guniting, 5 hydrants with hydrant fenders. SOE included grout columns, steel sheeting and drilled solider piles. Restoration of pavement/sidewalks and traffic protection was also required.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

Because construction work was adjacent to the elevated section of the MNR and around utility systems (owned by Con Ed, DEP and National Grid), the team was concerned about maintaining safe vibration levels, settlement, and preventing damage to utility infrastructure and services. Other challenges included managing vehicular traffic since Park Ave, between E110-112st, was closed for the duration of the project.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

To maintain and protect existing utilities, the team designed and engineered a SOE system, dewatering system and internal bracing.  Also, a 3rd party firm was hired to monitor vibration levels around the clock. Well thought-out traffic management and traffic signage provided minimal inconvenience to drivers and the surrounding community.
