PROJECT OVERVIEW

As part of Northrop Grumman’s groundwater cleanup programs, Posillico was retained by Arcadis to install 5,000 ft of dual containment piping in one of the most contaminated areas of the site. The objective was to remediate underground pollution, which was caused by Northrup Grumman’s mid-century manufacturing process, by extracting underground water from contaminated soil through this new piping and running it through a treatment plant before putting it back into the ground.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

The 16”x24” Dual Containment Piping was installed and fused underground, amidst existing utilities, making the actual installation itself quite challenging. The onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic created additional Health and Safety concerns as well. The plume cleanup represents one of the most high-profile remediation projects ever on Long Island, and as such, required Posillico to communicate diligently with the local municipalities and the residential communities the pipe was going through.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

Specialized equipment such as a large diameter fusing machine was selected for this project and operated by qualified fusion mechanics trained specifically for this type of installation. Through meticulous planning, and reliable safety protocols, the Posillico team was able to complete this project successfully, safely and ahead of the initial baseline schedule with minimal disruptions to traffic. Posillico remained very open with the community throughout the entire process and supported Arcadis with its PR efforts.
