Rockaway Beach Sandy Response

Location:
Far Rockaway, NY

Client:
NYCDPR

Contract Value:
$2 Million

Project Dates:
2013 to 2015

Summary

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Installation of 850 H-piles for support of new baffle wall. The wall separates the beach owned by NYCDPR and the private property adjacent. It prevents beach sand from migrating onto private property.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

The H-piles are embedded into sand and stick up above grade. Pre-cast concrete panels are inserted between the flanges of piles. Thus the piles are installed to architectural tolerances for location and elevation. The beach, in a residential neighborhood, is open to the public during work.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

Posillico solved the complexities of this project by using machinery with optical survey during installation combined with timber mats and steel falsework. The use of spotters for all moving equipment to protect the public was another important control measure that was implemented.
