PROJECT OVERVIEW
The scope for this project included shoulder reconstruction with aggregate base and asphalt paving to carry heavy traffic loads during construction, design and installation of a protection shield for partial demolition of bridge deck, partial removal and reconstruction of the existing concrete deck to increase the width of the travel lanes, reconstruction of portions of the substructure, reconstruction of finger joints, construction of dual median barriers, hydrodemolition of portions of the existing deck, latex-modified concrete overlay on the entire surface of the existing decks, storm drain and drainage structure construction and repairs, installation of piezo structures and loop detectors, grinding and placing of asphalt on approach roads, and marking and striping of the resurfaced roadway.
WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX
Maintaining traffic flow was crucial throughout the duration of the project. This portion of Interstate 495 experiences a large load of automobile use constantly. Numerous traffic maintenance methods, from lane closures to narrowing of lanes, were used to maintain traffic flow while also preforming the work in the highway’s median area and in one shoulder lane.
HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT
An estimated 230,000 vehicles use this bridge on a given day. The rehabilitation work of this project reversed the deterioration of the bridge deck, providing safer travels for the hundreds of thousands of motorists who traverse the bridge.
