PROJECT OVERVIEW

The scope of this project was the remediation of a contaminated property which currently serves as a parking lot for the City of Plainfield Police Department and for NJ Transit commuters. Many years prior to its current use, the property was the site of a manufactured gas plant. The project remedial scope included innovative support of excavation, in-situ soil mixing, backfill and restoration of the existing city road and parking lot.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

The project was performed predominantly within the City of Plainfield’s Police and Municipal parking lots. This location made the project challenging and required close coordination or trade-off of areas with city stakeholders to minimize the impact to the public. Minimal impact to Police activity was also a top priority. Multiple specialty contractors worked simultaneously which required coordination and planning. Lastly, the type of contamination present (benzene impacted material ) called for specialty remediation.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

To address these challenges, Posillico proposed performing the project in a modified phasing sequence which accelerated the schedule. Furthermore, by utilizing the in-situ stabilization as support of excavation as well as the means for remediation, Posillico was able to maximize project efficiency. The team also worked closely with the city stakeholders – city officials and police department – which facilitated efficient collaboration towards the common purpose of performing the scope in the least disruptive way.
