PROJECT OVERVIEW
Posillico performed construction of a Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Wall along the Raritan River in Bridgewater, NJ to protect the area from future flooding events. The project required clearing & grubbing of highly vegetated areas and wetlands areas before work could commence. A geotechnical investigation was performed to define areas of unsuitable subsurface conditions with a ground improvement program that followed. Posillico then began construction of the MSE wall and installation of associated geogrid and geotextile materials. The scope of work required import, placement, and compaction of approximately 85,000 CY of clean import fill. Final grade was raised approximately 18.0′ to adequately protect the area from future surging of the Raritan River basin.
WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX
The construction documents were considered a 60% design set and required Posillico and their design team to finalize the plans. Site conditions observed following mobilization brought to light various conflicts and poor subsurface soil conditions which did not allow for construction of the original design and caused delays to advancement of the 100% design. However, schedule constraints required the completion timeline of the MSE Wall to be minimally impacted in order to not interfere with future remediation goals in 2022.
HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT
Posillico worked closely with designers to find engineering solutions to the site conflicts and poor subsurface soil conditions. Once solutions were proposed, Posillico was able to identify the design option solution which would have the most minimal impact to the project schedule and project cost, facilitating an accelerated design change acceptance. The 100% design was submitted, approved, and executed in the field in a timely manner which ultimately allowed the owner to achieve their project goals.
