PROJECT OVERVIEW
The scope was to replace the existing +/-10’ tall x 22’ wide x 160’ long concrete underpass below Ocean Parkway. The existing concrete culvert was demolished and replaced with a precast culvert with wingwall sections on a crushed stone and slurry bed. Cast-in-place concrete ramps and parapets were constructed to tie into the existing paths to the culvert. The parkway was open cut to facilitate the new culvert. The scope also included re-routing of an existing 12″ watermain to facilitate installation of the new culvert, installation of concrete barriers with architectural masonry facades, guiderail replacement, timber barrier replacement, culvert drainage piping, and culvert lighting.
WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX
What made the job complex was the tight project schedule. It began in October and required completion prior to Memorial Day of the following year. The project also called for a maximum 21 consecutive calendar day full closure of Ocean parkway to perform all roadway and culvert demolition and replacement work. Extensive groundwater dewatering was also required in order to perform the earthwork and culvert replacement in the dry.
HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT
Posillico solved it by minimizing the impact to the traffic. The team proposed and got approval to perform the work in 2 stages, by closing and re-routing traffic in one direction at a time. To further minimize the impact to the traveling public, the team worked double shifts to perform demolition and associated excavation work.
