PROJECT OVERVIEW

From 1930’s through the 1950’s the Long Island Railroad Substations used mercury to convert the electrical current from alternating current to direct current to power trains. The improper disposal of the mercury resulted in contaminating the soil on the substation sites. Posillico was hired to remediate seven (7) substations adjacent to active railroad tracks. The scope of work included the excavation and off- site disposal of mercury, arsenic, and PCB contaminated soil from depths ranging from 1 foot to 13 feet below grade.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

Posillico was tasked with executing a highly demanding project that necessitated a remarkable degree of mobility, often requiring rapid relocation to multiple sites within a short timeframe. Moreover, each individual site presented a unique challenge due to its limited dimensions, thereby mandating meticulous planning of diverse excavation methods tailored to the specific requirements of each location.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

Due to the small space in each location, Posillico used different small space excavation methods such as vacuum truck, hand digging, and small excavation. With the short schedule and multiple locations this project required extensive planning between labors and equipment on each individual site. Posillico was able to successfully remediate all seven (7) substations on time and with no deviation in budget.
