PROJECT OVERVIEW
The purpose of this contract was to install a force main piping system, including all new piping and associated accessories to provide for the connection of the proposed sanitary plant. The contract scope of work includes installing and testing 56,615 LF of low-pressure sewer pipe ranging from 1.5” to -12” in diameter, 954 building connections installed and evaluated, and installing 129 concrete precast structures plus their interior piping. Within the project limits are four (4) pipe jacking locations totaling 1,046 LF, including two jacking locations beneath NYSDOT property and two beneath LIRR property, requiring additional coordination with each. Over 8600 tons of asphalt was laid for curb-to-curb restoration of Montauk Highway and William Floyd Parkway and site restoration as needed.
WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX
The horizontal directional drilling (HDD) component of this project was complex. Additionally, so was the coordination of work with underground and overhead utilities. Also, the pipe jacking coordination with existing underground LIRR at two specific locations that required Posillico’s team to jack 24” and 6” ran into utility conflicts which needed redesign.
HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT
In regards to the existing underground utilities, we had an extensive test pit program and redesigned the drilling profile to overcome the conflicts. One specific instance in particular was gas and water lines in a tight area for a trench box and Posillico had to install woodsheets before installing the manhole. Posillico redesigned the SOE for overhead utilities to utilize slide rail instead of driven sheets. To overcome the pipe jacking complexities we worked with the designer to develop a new install location for a sewer at the William Floyd Parkway at the LIRR location.
