PROJECT OVERVIEW

Posillico was brought in to retrofit and upgrade two head houses at each end of a ConEdison utility tunnel to prevent future flooding. The storm hardening scope of work included the installation of a sheet piling flood barrier wall with 20 ft flood gates, as well as the upgrade of existing steel structures, ventilation systems, electrical utility lines and control panels through the tunnel. Posillico also upgraded the backup generator and installed sump pumps as additional redundancies to protect the tunnel from future floods and further safeguard the tunnel’s electrical system.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

The project presented several challenges. A design oversight in the structural improvements required field changes and adjustments. Permitting delays forced Posillico into an accelerated schedule to meet the end of year deadline which was necessary to secure the public funding. The demolition of the existing headhouses required asbestos abatement. And lastly, the site location (under an active bridge roadway) provided a small footprint for Posillico to maneuver equipment, while sharing the work area with other subcontractors.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

To address these challenges and execute the project on time and safely, Posillico assisted ConEdison with the permit filings and increased its work hours by adding crews, shifts and overtime work. Posillico collaborated with the design engineer to quickly develop a suitable design solution and communicated with the ConEd facility contacts to coordinate work side by side other subcontractors.
