PROJECT OVERVIEW

The purpose of this storm hardening project was to reinforce the two headhouses that support the electrical cable tunnel that crosses Flushing Creek.  The project’s goal was to raise the headhouses above flood elevation on either side of the tunnel. The scope of work consisted of demolishing the existing structures, expanding the buildings footprint and adding mini piles to support the new structure on the College Point side. Both headhouses  required asbestos and lead abatement, masonry work for a stone building façade, concrete work to extend the tunnel vertically above flood levels, roofing work, and electrical upgrades to the existent utilities.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

The project presented several challenges. A design oversight in the structural improvements required field changes and adjustments. Permitting delays forced Posillico into an accelerated schedule to meet the end of year deadline which was necessary to maintain public funding. And the demolition of the existing headhouses required unforeseen asbestos and lead abatement.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

Posillico assisted Con Edison with the permit filings and increased its manpower by adding crews, extending shifts through  overtime work. Posillico  collaborated with the design engineer to quickly develop a suitable design solution for constructability issues and communicated with the Con Ed facility contacts to coordinate work alongside  other subcontractors in order to maintain schedule.
