PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project scope consisted of phased complete demolition of existing bridges over Thumb Run and its tributary and replacement with new conventional and box culvert bridges. The construction of the box culvert bridge included installation of coffer dams, rerouting of the creek water, construction of the foundation and the installation of a 3 bay, 21 segment precast culvert with flared wing walls. Similarly, the construction of the conventional bridge was comprised of complete reconstruction of the abutment footings and stem walls, as well as the installation of the precast box girders. In addition, the project required phased maintenance of traffic, paving and the installation of fences, water gates and guardrails.
WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX
The project NTP and contract durations forced the majority of the weather sensitive concrete work to be performed during the cold weather months. To accommodate this, the team resorted to the alternative option of using precast structural components. Additionally, the plans required the abutments to be constructed over bedrock which required major shoring and exaction well below the mean water level. Lastly, the presence of adjoining protected wetlands caused additional challenges with regard to the limits of excavation yielding the opportunity to use more innovative methods of shoring to perform the work.

Despite the weather constraints caused by the timing of the NTP, and the numerous geographical, environmental and technical challenges continuously threatening the on-time and on-budget completion of the project team persevered to meet all the project requirements and further reinforced the reputation of Martins Construction Corp. as a “Preferred VDOT Contractor” once again.
