PROJECT OVERVIEW
This recently completed Brownfield development project of a former solid waste recycling facility spanned 1.25 acres and is located adjacent to the tidally influenced Barbadoes Basin in Far Rockaway, Queens. The final development planned use is a 7-story self-storage facility.
Posillico was contracted to provide consulting and constructability reviews of the engineer’s design components of the project which resulted in the redesign of the future building piles and foundation.
The work accomplished fell into three main tasks:
(1) Surficial cut down of contaminated soils that included large volumes of buried concrete, treated wood piles, scrap steel and pipe to the subgrade elevations including materials segregation. All waste had to be transported and disposed of following all local and federal regulations. (2) Surgical excavation, removal, transportation and disposal of source contaminated soils from 28 excavation cells using slide rail systems to various depths (which included additional concrete, treated wood piles, steel scrap, etc.); (3) Site restoration which included the grading and backfilling of the site.
