PROJECT OVERVIEW
The project consisted of the cleaning and repair of eight digester tanks and five heat exchangers. The sludge in each tank was pumped out, screened, dewatered to a minimum of 18% solids by weight using a portable centrifuge, and loaded into trailers for disposal. The tanks were then pressure washed, disinfected, and inspected for miscellaneous structural repairs to the tanks and floating steel cover. Posillico also cleaned, disassembled, inspected, and rehabilitated existing tube-in-tube sludge heat exchangers.
WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX
The majority of work was in permit required confined spaces (PRCS), meaning that any worker entering the tank or attic space must be properly trained and certified. Along with maintaining strict adherence to lock out/tag out protocol, continuous air monitoring was provided along with plans and equipment to rescue workers in emergency situations. Furthermore, the bottom of the tanks were below the groundwater table elevation. To prevent the tanks from floating, a groundwater dewatering system was designed, installed and maintained 24/7 while the tanks were empty.
HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT
Posillico ensured that all personnel had up-to-date safety training in all necessary fields, and developed detailed safe work plans and Activity Hazard Analyses for all work on the project. Posillico also worked closely with the Owner and their representatives so that the owner’s operations were not interrupted while constantly advancing the project schedule.
