PROJECT OVERVIEW

The AvalonBay Polychrome West and East Remediation Project was performed along the Hudson River, as part of the Yonkers waterfront residential development of several 200+ unit buildings. The project scope included excavation and disposal of 15,000 Tons of contaminated material, In-Situ Solidification (ISS) of approximately 10,000 CY of soil, construction of a slurry mix NAPL migration barrier wall along the Hudson River, installation of 18 auger mixed DNAPL grout columns, construction of new sewer manholes, and an anti-seep collar installation over a 48″ combined sewer outfall.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

This project presented logistical challenges mostly tied to scheduling. Posillico had to contend with multiple contractors sharing the various parcels at one time and schedule pressure from the client. Additionally, subsurface soil conditions made excavation, load out and soil mixing difficult due to high ground water, heavy tidal influence from the Hudson River and differing soil types. Lastly, the discovery of unanticipated subsurface structures caused lengthy permit applications and regulated removals that had not been accounted for in the original schedule.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

Posillico communicated and coordinated efficiently with the client and other contractors on-site to ensure work continued without disturbance. Posillico also assisted the owner in designing and implementing dewatering of the site. By working sequentially around the tidal schedule so as not to lose any time on the project, as well as being highly responsive by getting permit process underway, the Posillico team ensured that the project finished successfully, safely, on time and on budget.
