Summary

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The 61st and York project required construction of a multi-level foundation for a luxury high-rise tower, located on the East Side of Manhattan. The building footprint was over 22,000 square feet and was bounded by York Ave between 60th St and 61st St. Posillico’s portion of the overall project consisted of the excavation and disposal of over 25,000 tons of contaminated soil, 30,000 cubic yards of rock removal, and installation of the foundation caissons and the concrete foundation.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

Because of the presence of Transit Authority vent chambers and the N subway line running along the southern property line under 60th St., special care had to be taken while installing the proposed caissons as well as breaking and removing the rock within inches of the TA’s structures. Optical and vibration monitoring was conducted while all construction activities within 25′ of the structures took place.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

The key to Posillico solving this problem was working closely with all of the agencies and engineering firms involved to come up with methods to expedite our work and not jeopardize the integrity of the surrounding century-old structures. Innovative drilling techniques, as well as surgical excavation and rock breaking, satisfied the various necessary requirements when working in close proximity to TA structures and allowed Posillico to perform all of the required work without incident or work stoppage.
