PROJECT OVERVIEW

The greater Gowanus Canal project was a challenging Heavy Civil Project located on a small jobsite within a congested neighborhood along the Gowanus Canal.  The project entailed installing a new combi wall bulkhead.  Project constraints prevented the piles from being delivered via trucking over the road.  Breakwater Marine assisted the project by chartering to the job team a material barge and coordinating material deliveries to a port in NJ. They also provided tug transportation from NJ to the Gowanus Canal. The flexibility for water transport and barge storage of pile materials helped the job team to achieve challenging schedule and logistical constraints.

WHAT MADE THIS JOB COMPLEX

Shallow Draft areas of the Canal made all deliveries tide dependent.  Because other active federal projects within the Canal narrowed the clearance for passage within the canal down to inches, close coordination was required between contractors.

HOW POSILLICO SOLVED IT

Breakwater tugs were available 24 hrs. often scheduling deliveries off shift so our land-based operations never ran out of materials. Open communications with the other projects in the Canal and pre planning for Bridge openings contributed to this project’s success.
